RSS (Chapter 5)

Before I read the chapter, I had no idea what an RSS was.  I have been on Facebook, and twitter before and never realized that my News feed was an RSS filter.  Right away I was interested with the different things you can do with an RSS. An RSS is a “really simple syndication”.  Which was a funny acronym because once I tried the application it really was simple.
I tried the Google reader, to see for myself if this application really was easy.  Within seconds of logging on I was opened up to much different news information.  I learned that the WWI debt from the treaty of Versailles will finally be paid off today (Sunday, October 3, 2010); nearly 90 years after the conclusion of WWI. http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/09/29/germany_to_finish_paying_off_world_war_i_debt_next_week
In another min I was reading about a hotel in Las Vegas that was recently built, however its concave shape allows sun rays to bounce off the hotel window and onto the public.  These strong rays are like a magnifying glass instantly burning people, or melting plastic bags.
As I was reading these articles, I couldn’t help but wonder if newspapers will someday be outdated material.  I was able to get the latest news specific to my own interests without needing to search through different pages of newspaper to find an article.  The RSS is able to meet your needs and interests as a reader and able to save you some time.  An RSS would be a valuable tool to use in the classroom.  First, if you are assigning different blog posts as homework for students, it could take a long time to read through everyone’s post.  However if you link everyone’s blog up to an RSS then this instantly becomes an easy task.  You only need to go to one person’s page instead of many different pages.
As a teacher, I could see myself assigning students to read through their news feeder to find an article for class.  This could be the new Hot Item for accomplishing current events in the classroom.  Students can instantly find out what is going on in the world.
Overall an RSS is just another tool to make our lives easier.  By saving time, we are able to spend more hours in the day doing more important things with our new found knowledge.
